What Makes Wool Different?

For centuries, wool has been valued for its warmth, durability and natural performance. Unlike synthetic materials such as polyester and acrylic, wool is a renewable fibre that works with nature rather than against it.

At Atlantic Island Wool, we choose natural wool products because they are breathable, long-lasting and biodegradable.

What Makes Wool Different?

Breathable

Wool naturally regulates temperature, helping to keep you warm in winter and comfortable in warmer conditions. Its unique fibre structure allows it to absorb moisture without feeling damp.

Durable

Quality wool products are designed to last. Wool fibres are naturally resilient, helping products maintain their comfort and structure for years.

Renewable

Wool is a renewable resource. Sheep naturally regrow their fleece each year, allowing wool to be harvested repeatedly without depleting the resource.

Biodegradable

Unlike polyester and acrylic, which are plastic-based fibres, natural wool can return to the earth at the end of its life.

Wool Compared

Natural Fibre vs Synthetic Alternatives

The difference is simple.

Wool is a natural fibre.

Acrylic and polyester are forms of plastic. Synthetic textiles shed microscopic plastic fibres during washing and daily use. These microplastics  enter waterways and contribute to long-term environmental pollution.

One works with nature. The others rely on fossil fuels and remain in the environment long after use.

Wool isn't just for the home.

Natural wool socks help regulate temperature, wick moisture away from the skin and remain comfortable throughout the year.

Benefits include:

  • Warm in winter

  • Breathable in warmer weather

  • Naturally odour resistant

  • Comfortable for everyday wear

  • Durable and long-lasting

  • Allow to air dry naturally

General Care

Wool is not disposable.

It improves with gentle use and careful storage.

Treat it with consideration, and it will remain part of your home for years to come.

Moths

Wool is a natural protein fibre, which means it can attract moths if stored improperly. With simple precautions, this is easily prevented.

  • Always store wool clean - moths are drawn to natural oils and food traces

  • Store in breathable cotton bags rather than plastic

  • Use natural deterrents such as cedar blocks or lavender

  • Air items periodically, especially if stored long-term

Regular use is the best protection. Moths prefer undisturbed, dark spaces.

Seasonal Storage

If storing for extended periods:

  • Ensure the item is clean and fully dry

  • Fold loosely rather than compressing tightly

  • Keep in a cool, dry place with airflow

Natural fibres need to breathe. Avoid vacuum-sealed plastic storage where possible

Wool is durable and long-lasting - it simply benefits from being cared for thoughtfully.

Why Choose Sheepskins?

Natural sheepskins have been used for generations for their warmth, softness and durability.

Each sheepskin is unique in colour, texture and character, making it both a practical and decorative addition to the home.

Benefits of sheepskins include:

  • Naturally insulating

  • Breathable and temperature regulating

  • Soft and comfortable underfoot

  • Durable and long-lasting

  • A natural by-product that helps reduce waste

Sheepskin rugs are typically a by-product of the food industry. Rather than discarding the hide, it is
tanned and used.

When sourced responsibly, sheepskin can represent a more complete use of the animal and reduce
waste.

At Atlantic Island Wool, we prioritise ethical sourcing and minimal processing.
